He began studying classical piano and basic theory at an early age. In 2005 he started studying the trumpet at the Municipal Conservatory of N. Ionia in Volos. Άρχισε μαθήματα κλασικού πιάνου και θεωρίας σε πολύ μικρή ηλικία. Το 2005 ξεκίνησε μαθήματα τρομπέτας στο Δημοτικό Ωδείο Νέας Ιωνίας στον Βόλο. Αποφοίτησε από το τμήμα τρομπέτας στο <a href="https://www.hku.nl/en/study-at-hku/utrechts-conservatorium">Κονσερβατόριο της Ουτρέχτης</a> το 2011 και από το <a href="http://www.conservatoire.be/">Βασιλικό Κονσερβατόριο των Βρυξελλών</a>. Σπούδασε επίσης στην Παιδαγωγική Ακαδημία του Πανεπιστημίου Θεσσαλίας στον Βόλο. Έχει συμμετάσχει σε πολλά πρότζεκτ από mainstream και σύγχρονη τζαζ μέχρι κλασική και ποπ μουσική όπως επίσης έχει παίξει σε αρκετές Ευρωπαϊκές χώρες. Έχει λάβει μέρος σε πολλές ηχογραφήσεις και έχει συνεργαστεί με σχεδόν όλους τους μουσικούς της Ελληνικής τζαζ σκηνής αλλά και με καλλιτέχνες της ποπ μουσικής. Ακόμα, έχει παίξει σε πολλούς συναυλιακούς χώρους και φεστιβάλ στην Ελλάδα και το εξωτερικό. Το "Urban Stories", το ντεμπούτο με το δικό του κουαρτέτο κυκλοφόρησε το 2014 και το διαδέχτηκε το "The Froth on the Daydream" το 2017. Από το 2016 ως το 2018, ο Στέλιος Χατζηκαλέας ήταν δάσκαλος τρομπέτας στο <a href="http://ncm.birzeit.edu/en">Εθνικό Κονσερβατόριο Edward Said</a>, στο <a href="https://www.birzeit.edu/">Birzeit University της Παλαιστίνης</a>.
