Short Biography
Manolis Koutsounanos was born in Kozani in 1959. At the age of 12 he started playing the trumpet at the Pandora philarmonic of Kozani, under the guidance of Eleftherios Karachalios. As a trumpeter he played dixieland, influenced by Louis Armstrong.
Since 1976 he turned his interest and dedicated himself in drumming. He began studying at the New Conservatory of Thessaloniki, attended workshops in Greece and abroad and became an active member of the jazz scene as a member of Blue Train and then of the Apopsis Τrio. With the Apopsis Trio he released an album entitled "Epiroes" and performed at Euro Jazz San Luis Potosi Festival in Mexico, the Sani Festival and more.
Later, he moved to New York with his son Sotiris (a drummer too), in order to learn jazz and its development better. Returning to Greece he toured all over Europe by an old car, performing on the road.
In 2015 he started recording his personal album, using the Kozani brass section and fusing it with jazz. The album, entitled "Taxidi - From tradition to jazz" was released in 2016 and lead to numerous performances in venues such as The Zappeion, the Athens Concert Hall and the Thessaloniki Concert Hall.

Ο Μανώλης Κουτσουνάνος γεννήθηκε στην Κοζάνη το 1959. Σε ηλικία δώδεκα ετών άρχισε τη μουσική παίζοντας τρομπέτα στη Φιλαρμονική Μπάντα της πόλης του «Πανδώρα», με δάσκαλο και καθοδηγητή του τον Ελευθέριο Καραχάλιο. Ως τρομπετίστας ασχολήθηκε με τη dixieland έχοντας επιρροές από τον Louis Armstrong.
Από το 1976 άρχισε να ασχολείται με τα τύμπανα που ήταν η μεγάλη του επιθυμία και που τελικά επικράτησε. Ξεκίνησε τις σπουδές του από το Νέο Ωδείο Θεσσαλονίκης, παρακολούθησε σεμινάρια στην Ελλάδα και στο εξωτερικό, ενώ παράλληλα ήταν ενεργός στη τζαζ σκηνή με τους Blue Train κι εν συνεχεία με το Apopsis Τrio με το οποίο ηχογράφησαν το άλμπουμ με τίτλο Epiroes και εμφανίστηκαν στα φεστιβάλ του Euro Jazz San Luis Potosi στο Μεξικό, στο Sani Festival κ.α.
Αργότερα, μετακόμισε για ένα διάστημα στη Νέα Υόρκη μαζί με τον γιο του και επίσης drummer Σωτήρη με σκοπό να γνωρίσουν την τζαζ και την εξέλιξή της από κοντά. Επιστρέφοντας στην Ελλάδα ξεκίνησε μόνος με ένα παλιό αμάξι να ταξιδεύει σχεδόν σε όλη την Ελλάδα και την Ευρώπη δίνοντας παραστάσεις στους δρόμους.
Το 2015 άρχισε να ηχογραφεί τον προσωπικό του δίσκο αναμιγνύοντας τα χάλκινα της Κοζάνης με τη τζαζ. Το άλμπουμ κυκλοφόρησε το 2016 με τον τίτλο "Ταξιδι from tradition to jazz" και οδήγησε σε μια σειρά εμφανίσεων σε χώρους όπως το Ζάππειο Μέγαρο, το Μέγαρο Μουσικής Αθηνών και το Μέγαρο Μουσικής Θεσσαλονίκης.
